„I was 32 years old when I was first diagnosed, was just settling into life and work in Iceland. Initially it was confined to the right testicle and had a radical orchidectomy to have the affected testicle removed. I was on follow ups with my cancer team in the UK as I elected to have my treatment there. Following my surgery my wife and I were surprised to find out that we were pregnant, as the doctors had said that at least a 6 month levelling of period was expected before fertility was regulated. Following the birth of my son, i neglected my follow up appointments due to fatherhood and work life so I wasn’t aware I had a relapse until 18 month following the initial diagnosis. I then flew back to london to undergo 12 weeks of chemotherapy and a follow up radio therapy session a few months later. I’m currently still recovering my condition and should hopefully be declared cancer free, 5 years on from the relapse.
My immediate family and friends are my biggest supporters and without them this would have been unbearable. I’m especially grateful for my mother and only she knows how to mother her child and of course for my wife who had to hold it all together for both of us and our newborn child.I am feeling much better today physically but still work to do mentally but such is life.
This experience has made my outlook on the future a little bleak then before the cancer as it is a dark and all consuming disease. I try not to dwell on those thoughts and immerse myself fully into my young family and work.“
